So much stolen from a storage unit! Now what?
Tally asked:
So my dad has been gone for about 4 months and he came home tonight to unload a trailer full of stuff into his storage unit. We open it up to see that it’s been comepletly robbed. SO MUCH is gone. His dad was a photographer in WWII and recently passed, and Dad inherited all of his equipment and photographs…all gone. All of his tools, all of his files (including tax, home, insurance…everything)…all gone. So much is gone he doesn’t even know what’s gone. So now what. I know insurance will cover the “cost” of most of it…but can he even report it? I mean, we don’t know when it happened, just that he left everything was there and the unit was locked up and now half of his life is gone. So can the police even do anything? I’m so sad for him. All of the information about MY house…even birth records…everything is gone. Makes me so nervous. ???

Oh i am so very sorry for your family. Report it to the Police. You never know this stuff may show up around used stores, pawn shops etc. I hope your father will be able to get at least some of this stuff. Bless his heart. Mel
wow, thats one for records =\ labeldcriminal
That’s really awful! He should definitely report it to the police, and also to the storage management company. Perhaps they have records and security cameras that might help in the investigation. schazjmd
good luck, this happened to me, and there were witnesses to the theft. I never recieved anything, I had no photos/proof of what was in there. All the cops can do is take a report and if things show up somewhere, they will let you know that you need to come identify. Hope you had proof of what was in there, serial #’s etc.
good luck to you. c c
How awful! Yes, report it, and perhaps check with pawn shop owners, and specialty shops in the area who might be buyers of the items missing. If there were unique or hard to find items, it wouldnt hurt to check sites like Ebay to see if they turn up there. Lots of criminals are stupid enough to try to sell stolen items fast & close to where they were taken from. Most importantly, call your bank & credit card companies to make sure they watch for fraud or identity theft. Get a subscription to a credit monitoring service, and if they notify you of any unauthorized activity, call it into the police asap. Good luck to you. I wish you the best! Cris Tee
1st if it was locked ask the storage company if they have any cameras around to see who goes in and out. Call the police and have them do a report you will need it for insurance anyways. Ask them to dust for prints. Then he should sit down and write out what he remembers about the cameras photos and other things that were in there. If he didn’t have storage insurance it may not be covered. If he puts anything into storage again like the cameras or expensive stuff he should take digital photos of the stuff. If he does get storage insurance this will help with the claim. Call the 3 credit reporting agencies and put a fraud alert on your credit both for your dad and anyone else whose info was stolen. bubbles
Yes, by all means, report it! In my jurisdiction we have a lot of storage unit theft. We have about a 75% recovery rate. Even though we are under staffed and have too many calls. The good thing about this situation, if you can see the good in it, is that most criminals are stupid.
First, sit down and make a list of everything missing and relevant value. If you can’t remember everything that will be ok just do the best you can.
Second, call the police and file a report.
Third, start checking all the pawn shops in your area. Most likely you will find something of yours in one of the shops. If you do, tell the pawn broker the item is stolen and he should put a hold on it. Call the police and report your find. The officer can get the pawn slip and ID the person who pawned it.
It takes a lot of work on your part but it is worth the effort. I have solved and recovered a lot of property this way.
Good luck Combatcop
