Multi-cat owners: do your cats split your home into territories?
Om Nom nom! asked:
One shares territory with all. The female has the bedroom and hallway and the other male takes the kitchen and storage room lol They all share the living room.

Up until recently, now everyone’s going where they want and they keep fighting LOL
what about your kitties?
oh I’m just going to lock them up in their rooms to reestablish territories lol they go through phases every couple months

We have 4. There were 2, and we got 2 new ones. We have a mix of male and female, and they’ve gotten along great. We tried to introduce them on neutral ground so it wasn’t a territory issue. Sometimes one gets a little antsy, but for the most part they’re fine. Maybe trying to get them all to play together? Like with a laser pointer, or a stick with a string? Give them all wet food in the same place too. jade
My cats get along very well in and out of the house. They are not ‘best buds’ put they do tolerate each other quite well. Whichever cat gets to a favourite spot first gets to claim it until it leaves. Then the other cat takes over. They do not appear to have staked out any particular part of the house where the other cat cannot go.
The house is a rather large older dwelling so conflicts are very rare. PEPI le PEW
My two old girls both went in all parts of the flat, but yes, I think one had first dibs in the bedroom and the other in the livingroom. Rowan G
Yes, actually, mine do. I have three cats and every one has a favoured spot or two that they defend - although, they are also willing to share here and there.
It was fun to watch when we moved house, they had to divide up the house among them again, the same with the food bowls and the litter boxes.
Some areas change ownership here and there, almost by rotation….

You normally can’t separate my cats. Marble constantly follows Binnie around. Binnie gets annoyed and bites her. I come to help Marble and she pushes me away as if I’m a nuisance. lgdubya
Not really. My six get along very well. There are not any territorial arguments and this is with two kittens.Seems like with an even number they socialize in pairs. john
No.
Could be because my cats are a family that there have been no major disputes at all concerning the apartment as a whole. All three use all the rooms. Though each cat has a few favorite spots no one claims sole ownership of any. When there is a conflict Fizzy’s ( mother of the other 2)wishes are always deferred to.
My cats have split my body into territories though!
Me sitting legs akimbo, Fizzy balances on my left thigh and Pooka claims the middle area and my right leg. Cecil has no claims.
Lying on my back, Pooka has from the waist up, Cecil from the waist down. Fizzy will get next to me but hardly ever on me.
On my side, Cecil has the backs of my knees. Pooka will sometimes balance on my hip for a while but prefers sleeping with her mother on a pillow beside the bed. susan n
