building a home server ?

i am looking at building a home server,however i dont have the funds to buy a specific HP MediaSmart Server so i have a spare tower pc which i plan to use,however is it up to the task…its specs are :
AMD Semprom 2.2ghz
1gb of pc3200 ddr ram (will upgrade to 2gb)

Onboard vga ( intel gma)
Realtek ac-97 audio (onboard)
gigabit nic

i will be using windows home server
would this system be up to the task….?

You don’t say what the server will be used for? I’m guessing as a media server as you mentioned the HP machine.
If so, I think it will be up to the task when you get the extra ram. You can never have too much ram. Max Headroom

How about an Enterprise server from Suse, very easy to configure. yes it is Linux so its almost free and it will not go belly up when the going gets tough.

Hi Brian, If your going to be using it as a media server then that sounds fine, The minimum specs for windows home server are
1.0ghz processer
512mb of ram
80gb hdd
100mbps ethernet port/card.
So yeah it does look up to the task, It exceeds the minimum specs so you should have no problems, Windows home server it is not really hardware intensive for me it ran as smooth as windows xp. So yeah your machine is up to the job so that should be you.
